We Need To Talk About Light

There’s a chill wind blowing this time of year. I feel I’m supposed to be at Peak Witch in these dark times, but there’s a sludgy resistance. You see, I want to hibernate and let all the shadow work happen in my dreams – ‘as if by magic’.  The dark times are the times of the year when we connect with long or recently dead ancestors or banish all those things in our lives that we want to be dead.  I’m fighting it. My desire…to do nothing.

Yet, here we are with Christmas approaching preceded by the longest, darkest night of the year. In anticipation many of us are already hanging fairy lights and glimmering baubles on our homes and plotting how we can bring light to others. There’s such beauty in a child who hasn’t yet had the magic of Christmas quashed from her, lighting up at the appearance of sweets and gifts on Christmas morning – ‘as if by magic’.

I remember experiencing seasonal depression for the first time when I was 8 or 9. I was disgusted and indignant with the whole thing because I’d recently found out that Father Christmas was a lie. The Magic had been murdered and I felt betrayed. Worse still, I was required to carry the secret of this lie in silence so my little brother could still believe. I’d been cast out of the magical winter wonder land. It was all a fraud and I raged. The twinkling light of Christmas had turned into a tiny 8 year old ball of fire.

Tell Me What You Want, What You Really Really Want

So here we are, what’s your experience of the season of giving? What do you want to receive? What are you resisting receiving? What needs more light? What’s happier left in its dark, forgotten corner? What do you want to give away. I mean, really, what do you WANT to get to rid of? And how is that different from what you are expected to give? More importantly, what are you open to receive?

Advent calendar

How does The Advent Calendar work?

Every day for 7 days, I’ll open a door of the Advent Calendar. Behind each door you’ll discover a little spell for your own enchantment. I have collected a treasure trove of my wicked Great Grandmother’s sayings, spells and good luck charms. Nobody ever put the evil eye on that lady! We’ll be drawing heavily on folk wisdom from the American South with flavourings of Appalachian Mountain Magic.

Each spell opens up a Question, around the theme of ‘Light. Giving & Receiving’. I use the cards for magic so I’ll draw three cards and discover what magic the cards want to gift us. You’ll receive the reading by email. The invitation is to open the door for your own exploration of the theme with cards or other divination or journeying practices. Pick you poison.

You are invited to receive each gift from the advent calendar, experiment, explore & share your results with the group. I will offer feedback, encouragement, etc where appropriate.

This is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced readers/magicians/witches. Each offering will be written in a way that is accessible for beginners. This can be a good intro to tarot or spell work for newbies.

Happy Snacking!
